No One Would Tell (1996)

No One Would Tell

Nothing makes more frequent true crime material than abusive relationships. The 1996 TV movie No One Would Tell, written by Steven Loring and directed by Noel Nosseck, documents the case of a teenage school girl who became the victim of her boyfriend’s ongoing physical abuse as she chose to stay silent out of her love for him.

No One Would Tell comes with the declaration that character names and setting etc. have been changed for privacy concerns. The movie, aired on NBC in May 1996, features the familiar teenage crush and subsequent romance between 16-year-old Stacy Collins (Candace Cameron) and her fellow student Bobby Tennison (Fred Savage), the school’s 18-year-old wrestling star. Stacy is repeatedly hit and dominated socially by Bobby while he also assures her that she is his one true love. Stacy remains silent but when she decides to end their relationship, and it ends in her death.

The topic and the message of this movie can’t be underscored enough. Pathological levels of hostility and control-seeking behavior among teens are important to highlight regardless of whatever gender they affect. The movie’s editing deserves praise for it hooks the viewer early on the crime at the beginning and returns to the scene after showing the backstory of the young lovers’ relationship. The subplot of Stacy’s mom (Michelle Phillips) dating a domineering man mirrors the main plot.

Both Savage and Cameron deliver believable performances in the movie’s lead roles, particularly Cameron who breaks from her cheerful and glamourous Full House image by playing the victim of abuse. The movie’s supporting cast shares the credit of doing well in their respective roles with Heather McComb as Nicki getting more screen time and emotion to perform.

For factual details, the real-life victim in this case was 14-year-old Amy Carnevale who was abused and killed by her 16-year-old boyfriend Jamie Fuller in MA in 1991. Patch.com reported in 2019 that Fuller qualified for parole after a 2013 Supreme Court ruling that allowed parole for teenage (at the time of their crime) convicts.
