Some of us keep an astronomical interest in movies. A recent article, however, that I came across proposed that the best movie genres for us could be an astrological choice. Ever heard of this connection? Confession: it’s news to me!
Since I found the same concept presented in another article on another site called So Syncd, which was published in 2022, I’m made to think it may not be a shocker to every moviegoer (covers all movie-watchers). So what’s with these people out there who toy with the idea that based on your zodiac sign, a certain movie genre is likely to better resonate with you?
Instead of trashing the idea without a thought, it’s worth a try to understand its foundation. The first article mentioned above is worded bit different than the So Syncd one, but the premise of both is the same, which is that people are a certain type when it comes to mood and personality, depending on their respective astrological sign. And so your taste for movies leans toward a certain genre or that you are more likely to enjoy watching a movie in a particular genre per your zodiac sign.
I don’t see a strong case there based on my own experience and my knowledge of my movie-loving friends. I used to enjoy watching nearly everything when I was younger from action and thrillers to drama and comedy. But over the decades, I’ve become selective and still enjoy many different genres long as the movie has a good story and is not done over the top. I can say the same for my friends who are into movies.
The interesting observation about the idea of watching your astrological match of a movie is the exclusivity they presume when dividing people into groups based on their date of birth (astrology). Consider this para for example from the So Syncd article:
If you’re an open-minded, independent, and eccentric Aquarius, then sci-fi could be the genre for you. Or if you’re a compassionate and kind Cancer, then drama will be more up your street.
It sounds like arbitrarily ruling that compassion and kindness are found in one division of people – Cancer – while open-mindedness, independence, and eccentricity belong on another side – Aquarius. My observation and understanding of personality types are not on the same page as this position. All these qualities can be in the same person regardless of his/her astrological camp. Arguably, compassion and kindness are more likely to be the companions and/or the result of open-mindedness in a person. Does that mean the astrological signs merge and the person becomes Cancquarius (Cancer + Aquarius)?
It’s interesting to see another article on the So Syncd titled “16 Personality Types as Movie Genres.” I didn’t feel the urge to read it really but at a quick glance, it appears to superimpose another system of divisions with related genres onto the zodiac one. This one doesn’t even try to explain the nature of the connection. By implication, readers are just supposed to take their word. How many other connections between genres and personality or astrological attributes have been proposed is outside my event horizon of interest.
The only question that such proposed connections between zodiac and genres (or zodiac and anything) is: who really consults such blogs before going to the theatre or sitting down to stream something online? Unless you are barely old enough to be getting ready for your first theatre experience as a young adult or are too old to remember what kind of movies you like, these I-know-what- you-will-like kinds of advice blogs don’t mean much, if anything at all. Plus they may influence a young or impressionable mind into a psychological attachment to a particular genre. Doesn’t sound very healthy to me!
My advice: try everything and see what clicks not just once but at different stages and ages in your life.
