In the long line of alien-and-space-themed sci-fi productions that filled the ‘60s, a small number of scripts dared a different premise even if they stayed within the disaster film genre. Andrew Marton’s Crack in the World makes this list as one of the early sci-fi movies with a geological disaster storyline.
Written by Jon Manchip White and Julian Zimet, Crack in the World imagines a scenario where a team of scientists led by Dr. Stephen Sorenson (Dana Andrews) has come up with a plan to harvest geothermal energy by shooting a nuclear missile through a specific part of the earth’s crust. Opposing Sorenson is Dr. Ted Rampion (Kieron Moore) who is not only a junior scientist but also the former love interest of Sorenson’s young and beautiful wife Maggie (Janette Scott).
